What do you get when you combine Durarara! And Darker Than Black?  Something like “Hamatora.”

RECAP:  Introducing the special Private Investigator team “Hamatora,” consisting of various Minimum Holders, humans with special abilities once certain stipulations are fulfilled.  In this first episode, a set of seemingly small-time cases turn out to be related as  the main duo, Nice and Murasaki, each take their own jobs.  Little do they know, there is actually a serial killer on the loose that specifically targets Minimum Holders.

Let me get this off my chest now, I love the opening.  I like livetune in general.  It’s not as catchy as Devil Survivor 2’s OP, but then again, I just haven’t listened to this one enough yet.

Alright, carrying on.  This show already had my interest in the first minute with Nice and Hajime at the bank.  The scene and how it played out just completely caught me by surprise.  We really got a wide range of characters here.  Some are idiots, some are serious, some just go with the flow.  Nonetheless, it reminds me of the variety of personalities we got in shows like Durarara!  And to make it just as interesting, we add in stipulation-based super-powers like Darker than Black.  Now, if only Birthday (yes, that’s his name if you missed it) was kind of like Hei in the fact that he was like “Chinese Electric Batman.”

Despite Nice being an overall idiot, he’s actually quite perceptive when it comes down to the job.  He seems to care more about saving people more than the reward, which is something that is very likely to be important later on in the story.  I have a feeling that it may have something to do with himself being saved by someone else and returning the favor by doing the same is his sense of justice.  Furthermore, I find it kind of odd to see where Murasaki fits in all this.  I mean, he and Nice are opposites as far as personality goes.  But that just might be where they need each other.  I know I’ve met a couple people like that, myself.  Sometimes you just need someone your opposite to keep you sane.

On another note, I’m curious as to the origins of Minimum Holders.  The show hasn’t delved into it yet (first episode, after all) and I’d like to know how and when Minimum Holders started showing up amongst humanity.  It’s not necessarily magic or psychic powers, so what is the source of this power?  I have a feeling that the reason why there is a serial killer seeking Min.Holders may be related to that source, or at least lead to the reason why Min.Holders exist in the first place.

Rating:  4/5

Dammit, Birthday! Chicken drumsticks don’t go in the glove compartment!
