Anime Review: Kakumeki Valvrave – 16
Marie’s past is revealed. But with this newfound information, what is her future?
RECAP: Without Haruto’s help, the plan to secure a transport vessel has stalled, leaving Units 03, 05, and the rest of the group of students in big trouble. Furthermore, Marie finds out what her past, beyond two years ago, really is from Pino. With Marie in the cockpit of Unit-01, she must take action to save the lives of her friends; but at a great cost.
Thanks to the problem with Marie’s confrontation with Haruto, the overall plan to steal the Dorssian transport vessel a bust. Raizou and Kyuma are heavily out-classed by the new Valvrave-modified Dorssian weapons, with enemy reinforcements inbound. Thankfully, the pre-set bombs were not entirely useless as they disabled enemy efficiency tremendously.
But Saki (still in the body of a child soldier) is stuck with A-drei after the ground collapsed below them. I see this as a tremendous opportunity that we will be illustrated the past from A-drei’s perspective, giving us more of L-Elf’s background in the process.
I wonder if they realize they forgot Saki was still with the Dorssians…
Meanwhile, Cain and Princess Liesolette hold a conversation that leaves an intriguing atmosphere. Given the idea that there are essentially two factions within Dorssia, the militaristic and royalist, it is sort of odd to think that Liesolette still holds some kind of grasp of power in Dorssia. It is very likely that the current Military regime treats Liesolette with power to keep the Royalists at bay. But some would argue that the royal family should be the ones in charge and not the military.
Additionally, what the hell is that machine she sat in? I highly doubt it is merely a personal sauna.
The primary focus of this episode is all on Marie. The mystery of her lost memories were revealed to have been consumed as a Runic power source for Pino and Unit-01. Marie was allowed to enter school because she was discharged as a potential pilot for Unit-01 due to the fact that most of her Runes were used up. If she had continued to have her memories “eaten” by Pino as Unit-01’s pilot, she would essentially destroy herself.
Which brings us to the sad moment of truth. In order to protect her friends, she willingly discarded her memories to fuel Unit-01 and destroy the Dorssian ground forces. Although a part of me is a tad disappointed with how fast the development of Marie’s character has transpired in the past three episodes, it still broke my heart little by little as she lost her memories one by one. In a way, Shoko’s words were her savior and the cause of her downfall.
After losing all of her memories up to the present, Unit-01 went into overheat seppuku mode, which also used a large burst of energy. The unfortunate thing here is that that burst of energy needed to be drawn from Marie as a source. With no memories left, the only thing left was her sense of self. With that, we end the episode with the successful securing of the transport for everyone, but at the cost of a dear friend.
Memories seem to be the strongest source of power for the Valvraves. Up til now, we have only seen the power of Emotions’ Runes. I wonder what Life Energy itself would bring about.
The Dorssian Royalists seem to have caught Akira’s signal and wish to aid our heroes. But what exactly are the true motives of the “Royalists?”
