When the guys are stranded on one of the other islands, they have no choice but to enter this creepy abandoned lighthouse. Would you do it in their position?
RECAP: When Makoto tries to save the drowning Rei, his yell wakes up Haru and Nagisa. They both realize the two are missing and immediately go out to save them. Thankfully, everyone ends up being okay, but they are stranded on one of the other islands, Sukishima. As they wait for the storm to die down, they take shelter in an abandoned lighthouse/rest house. It is here that Makoto reveals to Nagisa and Rei the truth behind why he froze up in fear while trying to save Rei.
Makoto freezes up when he tries to save Rei. Fortunately, his yell woke up Haru and Nagisa and they were able to take action. It’s great that they were saved in the end, but it would’ve been the smart thing to do to call for help before entering the water. But I suppose in the heat of the moment you can’t really expect to always think logically.
For all you BL-living fujoshi, this was your moment of triumph that was SO CLOSE to happening. I was quite surprised with this scene because I am so used to other CPR events in other anime where someone immediately takes action to perform CPR. However, Haru hesitates. Oh well, so long as Makoto is all right.
A very interesting scene detail adds in Rin waking up and looking outside in concern for the guys. Since he knows they are camping outside he has an off feeling, but he returns to sleep. This reinforces the idea that Rin doesn’t necessarily dislike Haru and the others and deep down still wishes for their well-being.
So my prediction was right for the most part. A grandfather-esque figure to Makoto was swallowed up by a terrible storm out at sea and that is what caused his fear of the ocean. The goldfish, too, was also a symbol of the loss Makoto suffered. What makes this event remarkable is that Makoto comes out with the truth, enabling the others to understand how he feels.
Overall, this episode struck me as an event that truly strengthened the bond the guys share; especially for Makoto. With the prefectural tournament coming up, they’ll need each other to push to the top.
I’ve had an embarrassing moment where I called a teacher “Mom” or “Dad,” but I think I would die from embarrassment if my underwear was shown in public like Rei’s story. D:
