Tanuki (狸; たぬき)

Japanese Raccoon Dog

If you watched the first season of this Summer 2013 season’s Uchoten Kazoku, here is a little background on what exactly a Tanuki is.

For one, Tanuki are an actual species variant of the raccoon that lives in Japan.

However, in mythological lore, Tanuki (or Bake-danuki) are said to be related to the gods of nature.  They are said to have the abilities to shape-shift into humans and various things.

  1. Except that they’re not related to raccoons at all, and are actually canids.
