C3-bu is the latest manga adaptation from Gainax. It is a story about a 1st year high school girl hoping to change her shy personality in a new school. But where does an Airsoft Battle Club fit into all of this?
RECAP: Yamato Yura is new to Stella Girls’ Academy. Because of her shy personality, she hopes to change all of that in the prestigious, refined atmosphere of a new school. When she gets caught in her new dorm room messing with her roommate’s airsoft guns and gear, she is dragged into possible recruitment into the “C3 Club,” a club all about the practice of mock battles with airsoft guns. In an effort to recruit her, the members invite her to participate in a game, using cake as bait.
As explained in the Recap, Yura is a shy girl that is determined to try and change herself now that she is attending a new school. She even goes to explain in her early dialogue that she studied really hard to be able to be accepted into the ojou-sama atmosphere of Stella Girls’ Academy. This is not a foreign concept at all. In fact, many series host the idea of having their main character wish to change their “bad habits” by living in a new environment. Yura is headed in the right direction so far, but that luck just might not work as she intended.
C3-bu, short for “Command, Control, and Communications,” is a club aimed at the practice of infantry battle tactics utilizing airsoft weapons. The club, consisting of quite the colorful array of weirdos, is a bunch of girls that enjoy the excitement of these battles among themselves. However, because of the conditions of which the club’s activities work, the lady-like student body is quick to disregard the C3-bu, resulting in lacking numbers in its members. That brings us to our next great moment…
… Yura done been caught in the act. First of all, Yura, why are you messing with your roommate’s stuff in the first place, girl? You haven’t even met your senpai yet and you’re touching what doesn’t belong to you. Oh well! It’s because of this that the wheels of excitement begin to turn for our girl. At first, Yura sees the club as a “tea, cake, and do nothing” type of club, which sounds oddly familiar to K-On! Well, she is in for a surprise when they decide to get Yura in on the action.
If you’re like me, you’ll kind of wish this battle was like the memorable airsoft gun battle in FLCL. Nonetheless, this entire scene presenting the wonders of mock battles does a great job at bringing interest in the club activities to Yura AND us viewers. It is quite obvious, even though all the club members are weirdos, that Yura will slowly change to become a very important member of the C3-bu.
In every bit of this show, I felt a bit of that Gainax charm that I’ve come to love from shows like Abenobashi, FLCL, and Gurren Lagann. I’m definitely going to keep watching this one.
Baited and outsmarted.
