Summer 2013 Anime Preview

Hey all check out what’s airing this upcoming Summer season!  They’ll be starting very soon, so be sure to find them on your choice of anime streaming site within the next couple weeks.  The list below is based off the 5/27/2013 neregate.com Summer Anime Chart v2.1.

The list carries all my personal thoughts for each series set to air as well as links to their Animenewsnetwork.com info pages and Promotional Videos (if available).

Kingdom 2

Air Date:  06/08/2013

Thoughts:  As the title implies, this is the 2nd season of the series of the same name.  I can’t really get into historical wartime series unless there is something over the top in to get hooked to (See: Sengoku Basara).  I didn’t bother watching the first season, so I think I’ll take a pass on this one.  Check this one out if you fit at least one of the following: 1) You’re really into historical/wartime stories, or 2) you’re already watching this.

Watching? – No.

Tamayura ~More Aggressive~

Air Date:  07/07/2013

Thoughts:  Another series whose first season was not on my radar.  As much as I do love me some calm, peaceful anime in-between everything, the story summary for this one likely didn’t interest me enough back then.  Seeing the PV (linked below) has sparked a little bit more interest, but maybe not enough to get me to marathon the first season.  Nonetheless, this one sounds like it has that soothing aura of relaxation and light comedy to just sit back and enjoy.

Watching? – No.

Kimi no Iru Machi

(A Town Where You Live)

Air Date:  07/13/2013

Thoughts:  I’ve heard many a good things about the original source manga.  Considering there is finally going to be an anime adaptation, it may give me the incentive to jump the gun and marathon read the manga.  I have a feeling that the anime may end up with an original or open ending.  Then again, at 220+ chapters, I’m not entirely sure if the source material will be ending soon.  Anyways, this one is a romance drama llama kind of deal.  Check it out if you’re a fan of the series or just want a good story of the genre.

Watching? – Yes.

Gen’ei o Kakeru Taiyou

(The Sun Penetrates the Illusions)

Air Date:  07/06/2013

Thoughts:  An interestingly Tarot card themed series.  Genei may seem like a cutesy girl anime at first, but battles and supernatural mystery surrounding weapons based on Tarot cards make the premise all the more exciting.  I’d give this one a shot with the 3-episode rule to see if it’s your cup of tea.

Watching? – Maybe.

Info, PV

Servant x Service

Air Date:  07/04/2013

Thoughts:  An anime depicting the lives of Public Service members in a Hokkaido government office.  The PV (linked below) gives off a similar feeling to that of the anime/manga Working!!  I expect this to be a light-hearted comedy series that relies heavily on character interaction rather than any events.  If you liked Working!! Or Nichijou, this one may interest you.

Watching? – Maybe.

Monogatari Series 2nd Season

Air Date:  07/06/2013

Thoughts:  If you keep up with recent anime and don’t know about Bakemonogatari, I want to know what rock you’ve been living under.  Studio SHAFT’s big hit returns as it will follow material from six volumes of the light novel series.  After the popularity of the previous airing, this season will go on for half a year.  SHAFT and novel author, Nisioisin, have stated they want to animate the entire series.  Here is a big step in doing so.

Watching? – Yes.

Info, PV

Senki Zesshou Symphogear G

Air Date:  07/04/2013

Thoughts:  I’m going to say it straight, the ONLY reasons I watched this show’s first season was because: 1) Aoi Yuuki’s adorable voice, and 2) Mizuki Nana voices and sings.  It ended up turning into something I did not regret as the series presented itself as a battle-oriented magical girl sort of series.  Following the rather open-ended ending of the first season, I am eager to find out where the series takes us this time.

Watching? – Yes.

Recorder to Randosell Mi

Air Date:  07/01/2013

Thoughts:  Add another series of first seasons I didn’t watch.  In my opinion, Recorder to Randoseru is one of those comedy series that you have to be tolerant about constant misunderstandings.  I gave the first season the 3-episode rule, easily got tired of it.  How it got green-lit for a second and third season, I don’t know.  You’ll have to check it out if you think it’d be something up your alley.

(Linked PV is for the 2nd Season, but it is pretty much more or less the same.)

Watching? – No.

Kin-iro Mosaic

Air Date:  07/06/2013

Thoughts:  Based on the manga of the same name, we once again have another anime about the daily lives of a group of high-school girls, difference being that we add in an exchange student from Great Britain.  This series feels like it will be similar in comedy to that of this Spring season’s Yuyushiki, where cultural puns and funny situations keep the interest flowing.

Watching? – Maybe.

Info, PV

High School DxD NEW

Air Date:  07/07/2013

Thoughts:  Ecchi anime is ecchi.  I dropped this after 3 episodes when the first season aired, to be honest.  The story was predictable and the main character is a full on retard that primarily thinks with his dick.  I’ve heard a number of interesting things about the show, but the blatant overuse of fanservice was too much for my taste.  If you liked the 1st season, feel free to continue watching this 2nd one.

Watching? – No.

Info, PV

Senyuu Dai 2 Ki

Air Date:  07/02/2013

Thoughts:  First season’s summary reads as follows: regular guy who happens to be a descendant of a Hero accidentally opens a Demon World gate while trying to cook popcorn.  While it sounds funny, the animation style and basicness of the story give off the feeling that this is one of those series for 7-10 year old boys.  I won’t judge, because I watch Pretty Cure at the age of 24.  But I will flat out say that there are likely better options this season.

Watching? – No.

Info, PV

Fantasista Doll

Air Date:  07/06/2013

Thoughts:  An original anime series that has music that, based on the PV linked below, reminds me of PreCure.  If anything this series feels like a Yuri harem waiting to happen.  A battle-magical girl-esque series featuring girls that are summoned via cards swiped on a special smartphone.  The animation doesn’t look too bad either.  I hope this one does well.

Watching? – Maybe.

Info, PV

Blood Lad

Air Date:  07/07/2013

Thoughts:  A vampire obsessed over humanity and a ghost girl who has lost her humanity.  The source manga is labeled as a dark comedy, so maybe this might be one to check out if you don’t have your hands full already.  The PV makes me feel like it may be the dark horse to surprise everyone with how fun it is, much like this Spring season’s Hataraku Maou-sama.  Plus, it has May’n singing the OP; that alone is enough to give me a reason to 3-episode rule it.

Watching? – Maybe.

Info, PV

Uchouten Kazoku

Air Date:  07/07/2013

Thoughts:  A modern-fantasy set in Kyoto where we, I believe, observe a war between families of Tanuki and Tengu.  Not entire sure on the details, but the PV makes the series out to be a very adventurous type that emphasizes on the importance of supporting each other as a family.  Just might be fun to watch.

Watching? – Maybe.

Info, PV

Love Lab

Air Date:  07/04/2013

Thoughts:  An all-girl cast set in middle school following girls of various anime stereotypes.  Not sure how to feel about this one as it seems like it’ll be just another girl’s group comedy series that is more blatant in the character archetypes.  I’ll check out the pilot, but that might just be all.

Watching? – No.

Info, PV

Teekyuu S2

Air Date:  07/07/2013

Thoughts:  I love the voice of Hanazawa Kana, but sometimes one voice actress isn’t enough to get me to watch another schoolgirl comedy show about a bunch of girls in a certain club.  I didn’t watch the first season, so I’m not expecting to watch this one.

Watching? – No.

Silver Spoon

Air Date:  07/11/2013

Thoughts:  Following the conclusion of Fullmetal Alchemist, mangaka Arakawa Hiromu, began work on this Agriculture-themed series, Silver Spoon.  I started reading the manga a while back, but sadly just had a falling out of disinterest.  The thing you should know is that you definitely shouldn’t go into this series expecting Fullmetal levels of interesting.  I believe I read somewhere that all the agriculture stuff is based off of Arakawa-sensei’s personal experiences, which is pretty neat.  Hopefully the anime will respark my interest into reading the manga again.

Watching? – Yes.

Info, PV

Inu to Hasami wa Tsukaiyou

(Dog & Scissors)

Air Date:  07/01/2013

Thoughts:  A very weird premise where a normal guy who loves to read books is killed and resurrected in the body of a dachshund dog in the care of a sadistic novelist.  Based on a light novel, I’m interested to see where this leads.  Surely there is some supernatural stuff going on here, with the main character turning into a dog.  If the anime does well, it may gain support towards translation of the light novel.

Watching? – Yes.

Dangan Ronpa no Gakuen to Zetsubo no Kokosei The Animation

(Dangdanronpa The Animation)

Air Date:  07/04/2013

Thoughts:  By the same director of Persona 4 The Animation, Dangan Ronpa is another video game adaptation.  Supposedly the game is a Japan exclusive released on PSP/iOS/Android, that play much like the Ace Attorney games, only more fast-paced and contains a Social Link system similar to the Persona series.  That said, a mystery detective type of series with a Shin Megami Tensei-esque flair, the game may not be available in the states, but this anime will surely take care of the issue of checking it out.

Watching? – Maybe.

Info, PV

Tokurei Sochi Dantai Stella Jo-Gakuin Koutou ka C3-bu

(C3-bu)

Air Date:  07/04/2013

Thoughts:  Don’t let the PV trailer deceive you; this isn’t some all-girl version of Cowboy Bebop.  Even though I knocked on Teekyuu’s formula of a group of girls in a club, C3-bu’s charm just might lie in the nature of the club activities: Survival Games.  Best of all, it will be animated by GAINAX, so you can be rest assured that the moments of Paintball action will not disappoint to be a spectacle.  I’ll likely give this one the 3-episode treatment.

Watching? – Maybe.

Info, PV

Brothers Conflict

Air Date:  07/02/2013

Thoughts:  A reverse-harem that I definitely will be skipping out on.  This show is for all you ladies out there.  One girl moves into a new family after her dad remarries.  Now her problem is that she now has 12 brothers in varying age.  I suppose that will bring enough male variety to the table.

Watching? – No.

Info, PV

Rozen Maiden (2013)

Air Date:  07/04/2013

Thoughts:  A remake of the highly acclaimed series from early 2000.  Fans, including myself, have been asking for a third season for Rozen Maiden for years.  After the original anime was stuck with an original ending and the manga ended abruptly, a 2nd adaptation of the manga was made to right the off-set feelings left to the readers.  Now, with this adaptation, the anime will be able to follow the source manga much closer, enabling new and old fans to enjoy the Alice Game.

Watching? – Yes.

Info, PV

Genshiken Nidaime

Air Date:  07/06/2013

Thoughts:  Another sequel to the Genshiken series, Nidaime covers the later chapter the Second Season where Ogiue is now the acting president of Genshiken.  With a majority of the previous members now graduated and working, the newer members of Genshiken are now a majority female!  If you’re a fan of the series, or a fan of otaku culture itself, the Genshiken series is definitely worth the watch.

Watching? – Yes.

Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaete mo Omaera ga Warui!

(It’s not my fault I’m not Popular!)

Air Date:  07/08/2013

Thoughts:  The popular 4chan favorite manga finally gets its anime adaptation.  This socially awkward series has quickly become an online favorite for many.  I am assuming it is because most readers feel bad and would very much want to be there for the main character, Tomoko.  A gag comedy series about a girl who has no friends and doesn’t know how to change that, WataMote takes that extra step in making simple moments seem lonely.

Watching? – Maybe.

Info, PV

Kitaku-bu Katsudou Kiroku

Air Date:  07/04/2013

Thoughts:  Another Girls Club manga adaptation, seeing as there are so many of these this season, I’m starting to think that it’ll all just come down to which one has the most appeal to you.  The hook to this one is that the girls are all more-or-less free spirits because they are bound by certain obligations at home.

Watching? – No.

Info, PV

Gatchaman Crowds

Air Date:  07/12/2013

Thoughts:  A new anime based off the Gatchaman classic series.  Very little has been announced about this series aside from plot summary and character designs.  Hardcore fans of the Gatchaman classics may not be too keen on this one, but who knows how it’ll turn out.  With the announcement of the Live-Action Gatchaman movie, this just might be the return of a number of classics being reimagined for modern viewership.

Watching? – Yes.

Info, PV

Futari wa Milky Holmes

Air Date:  07/13/2013

Thoughts:  Sequel to popular moe mystery-comedy, Tantei Opera Milky Holmes, this new season especially features two new characters, Kazumi and Alice.  To make it even more special, Kazumi will be voiced by the winner of the casting call for an open audition, Terakawa Aimi.  If you liked the previous seasons of Milky Holmes, I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

Watching? – No.

Free!

Air Date:  07/03/2013

Thoughts:  Kyoto Animation’s newest work following the success of Chunibyou is called Free!  It features a male-focused cast surrounding a Swimming Club.  How does this differ from other cases of high-school kids in a club?  Well, for one, the male dominance in the cast list.  It may be the type of show that caters more to the fujoshi crowd, but I expect the magic of Kyoto Animation will do something to break that wall down.

Watching? – Yes.

Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya

Air Date:  07/12/2013

Thoughts:  Prisma Illya is a spin-off of the popular Fate/Stay Night series.  Utilizing a number of the same characters, the series reimagines the lovable little girl, Illyasviel von Einsbern, in an alternate universe where she becomes a Magical Girl.  Fans of the Fate series will greatly enjoy this series.

Watching? – Yes.

Info, PV

Ro-Kyuu-Bu! SS

Air Date:  07/05/2013

Thoughts:  I just can’t deal with lolicon-themed series.  I’m sure this series is good in its own respect.  But from what screenshots and PVs I’ve seen, this isn’t the type of show for me.  However, if you’re into cute girls doing cute basketball things, by all means, watch this series as it continues into its second season.

Watching? – No.

Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist

Air Date:  07/07/2013

Thoughts:  A fujoshi oriented series, Makai Ouji actually has an interesting plot summary.  If only the cast weren’t so obviously meant for the Yaoi-loving ladies, I would consider watching this.  Oh well.

Watching? – No.

Info, PV

Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai Season 3

(The World God Only Knows Season 3)

Air Date:  07/08/2013

Thoughts:  As a big fan of this series, I am definitely going to watch this season of KamiNomi.  It will primarily focus on adapting the Goddesses story arc, which is where a bulk of the main story starts to pick up in the series compared to the previous two seasons of Keima’s escapades.

Watching? – Yes.

Info, PV

Hakkenden  -Touhou Hakken Ibun- Season 2

Air Date:  07/07/2013

Thoughts:  A continuation of the fantasy drama of the same name.  I never watched, nor heard of, this series’ first season, so this one will likely also be put in the “Not watching” list.  The plot summary seems interesting, now that I have read it, but not enough to get me to backtrack and marathon.  If you’re already watching this series, chances are you will continue to do so this season.

Watching? – No.

Chou Jigen Game Neptune The Animation

(Hyperdimension Neptinua The Animation)

Air Date:  07/12/2013

Thoughts:  Gaming parody video game series, Hyperdimension Neptunia, finally gets an anime adaptation.  Fans of the video game will be eager to see this show as the super-moe girls of Neptunia are animated in a more adorable format.  To be honest, I fell asleep a number of times playing the first game, so I am hoping that this show will act as the step in so that I don’t have t play the first game to move onto Mk2 and Victory.

Watching? – Yes.

Info, PV

Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi

Air Date:  07/06/2013

Thoughts:  Based on the light novel of the same name, this supernatural drama presents an interesting story about a young female gravekeeper of a village and a mysterious man that kills everyone in her village.  Where this all leads seems interesting enough to get me to at least check out the first couple episodes.

Watching? – Maybe.

I have decided to be a little more risky for this season by going for more titles and hope that they will turn out well, at least better than 2013 Spring.

    • I agree. There are definitely a bunch of interesting new titles upcoming that at least deserve the 3-episode rule. Only problem lies in how many shows one watches this season. @_@;;

      • Quizoxy

Yeap, indeed a trouble especially for bloggers like us who have to mange time well! I tend to filter out the series along the way, focusing on titles that appear to be worthy of time.

  3. There are 7 new titles I’ll be giving a try this upcoming season – a couple against my better judgement, but mostly I’m quite looking forward to what the summer line-up has to offer. Is it just me, or do things look especially diverse this time around? Brothers Conflict, Free!, Gin no Saji, Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi, Kiniro Mosaic, Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist, and Servant x Service for me.

    • There are certainly a wide, diverse set of titles airing. However, I noticed there are quite a bit of “girls in a ‘X’ club, doing cute things” kind of series. In the end, as always, it’s up to one’s personal tastes.

  4. Thank you! I just finished watching Fairy Tail and I was looking for some new Anime’s to start on! This should help me!

    Love,

    Ness
