Manga Monday Ch.9 – Kamisama Hajimemashita

It’s Manga Monday.  A weekly post highlighting a different series.  I’ll mostly do posts on completed or ongoing series that are regularly updated.  While I do not condone scanlations, please support the creator and licensing companies by purchasing the work where available.

This week’s manga is – Kamisama Hajimashita

Summary (Mangainn.com):

Nanami Momozono is alone and homeless after her dad skips town to evade his gambling debts and the debt collectors kick her out of her apartment. So when a man she has just saved from a dog offers her his home, she jumps at the opportunity. But it turns out that his place is a shrine, and Nanami has unwittingly taken over his job as a local deity! Nanami has all kinda of new responsibilities she does not understand, dangers she is unaware of, and a cranky ex-familiar who is…actually pretty hot. What is a new-fledged godling to do?

Hako’s Thoughts:

A series that takes the formula of the distressed, debt-ridden main character and plot conveniently gives them a special second chance.  Kamisama Hajimemashita, also known as Kamisama Kiss in the States, is a surprisingly fun shoujo manga that even the guys can enjoy.  It has a good mix of comedy and non-romance story to keep it from being the usual full-on shoujo romance.  The fact that Nanami has to adjust to being the new Land God of the Mikage Shrine and the responsibilities that title come with is enough to propel the overall story and world.  The romance between Nanami and Tomoe intertwine with the Land God job duties on most occasions  often questioning the taboo of youkai-human relationships.  This is definitely a series to check out for a good rom-com.

The manga can be found in your local bookstore, published by Viz Media.  A 13-episode anime has aired covering a couple of the beginning story arcs of the manga.
