Tuesday Terminology: Kotatsu

Tuesday Terminology is a weekly segment to enlighten the masses with words, phrases, and ideals usually tacked on to today’s anime/manga scene.

This week’s topic: Kotatsu

Sitting under the Kotatsu during the cold winter is a life-long tradition in Japan.  A Kotatsu is a standard Japanese coffee table with a heating unit underneath.  Additionally, to keep the heat in, a blanket covers the table with an board placed atop to replace the original table-top.  Originating from a 14th century Charcoal-based heating, it has since then evolved into today’s electric-based heating unit.  You’ll often see this wonderful piece of furniture in anime and manga where any character sunk underneath will be unwilling to leave it’s warmth.

Kotatsu units can run up from $250+ based on the make and quality.
