It has been announced via Twitter that popular murder mystery series Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni (a.k.a. When They Cry in the States) will see a return in animated format. Whether it is a mere OVA series, season or even a reboot is currently unknown.
[Update:] It has been revealed that the new project will cover a short story that is called “Higurashi Outbreak.” It will focus on two main characters, Maebara Keiichi and Ryugu Rena, as they deal with a mysterious virus plaguing the village to the point of complete quarantine.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is adapted from the visual novel series of the same name that began in 2002. Since then, 9 “chapters” complete the entirety of the story. The anime first aired in Japan in 2006. The anime is comprised of 4-cours (Seasons) amounting to a total of 50 episodes, as well as a 5-episode OVA set. It is set in the remote village of Hinamizawa and focuses on the mystery behind the village’s annual Watanagashi festival and it’s local god, Oyashiro.
