Thankfully, this movie is not another American adaptation atrocity. For those new to the loop, a new movie in the Dragon Ball Z franchise is set to release in Japanese theaters March 30th, 2013. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods is supposedly set within the “lost decade” after the defeat of Majin Buu, but before the 28th World Tournament. While this is news long known, the real news is Toei Animation’s Dec. 3rd reveal on story details for the new movie:
“The story takes place a few years after the fierce battle with Majin Buu. Bils, the God of Destruction who maintains the balance of the universe, awakens from a long slumber. Hearing rumors that a Saiyan defeated Frieza, Bils goes on a search to track down the warrior who championed this feat – Goku. King Kai advises Goku to avoid a confrontation, however, Goku is ecstatic that a new opponent has appeared after many years and decides to fight. Unfortunately, Goku is no match for Bils’ overwhelming power and is defeated. Bils leaves, asking if “there is anybody on Earth more worthy to destroy?” Will Goku and the Z Warriors really be able to stop the God of Destruction?!”
Because this takes place in an unpublished part of the timeline AND the author, Akira Toriyama, has been deeply involved with the film since conception, it is safe to say that this movie is canon storyline, unlike the feeling the other films have given off in the past. There are currently no plans for international release in Europe and the US. But seeing as this is from one of the world’s most popular anime series, do not be surprised to see select subtitled screenings soon after initial release. I know Funimation Entertainment, who hold licensing/publishing rights to the Dragon Ball series in the US, is usually really good about treating flagship series well.
I’m not entirely sure which series may have been milked more, this or Evangelion. Don’t get me wrong, I hold my nostalgia goggles up in pride when it comes to Dragon Ball. But you’d think that there should be a time to just let go. Also, why is Bils an evil purple bunny?
